I can hardly contain my excitement about going there tomorrow to try their BBQ. I absolutely love BBQ so to go to a place that is ranked in the Top 10 of BBQ places in the country has me smiling just thinking about it.

The restaurant that is ranked Number 2 on the list shocked me, being that it is in Brooklyn, NY. I have decided to give my attention to the Number 7 ranked BBQ place on the list, Franklin Barbecue!

Doing research on Franklin Barbecue I decided that the best time to get there tomorrow morning, a Friday, between 7:00 and 7:30 AM. I was advised that Saturdays are the worst day to go so I’ll be going on a Friday hoping that it won’t be as bad.
So bright and early tomorrow I will be waking up and packing a cooler full of beer, an umbrella to help fight the Sun, my laptop, the book I’m currently reading “The Third Plate”, and folding chairs so I don’t have to rent them from The Chair Guy. Once the cars packed and everything is accounted for it will be off the Franklin Barbecue to experience this culinary masterpiece and to see if it lives up to the hype.
BBQ Morning:
It’s 8:57 AM and I am sitting in line. At around 8:35 this morning I find myself 100-120 people back. Not too bad considering the first people in line got here at 6:15, I just had to ask! A girl that works for the restaurant came by a few minutes ago to let us know that coffee, bathrooms, and water was available since it was supposed to be 97 degrees as the day progressed. Luckily I came prepared with a cooler full of beer and water. I also jimmy rigged my umbrella to the lawn chair to try to keep the sun off.
Thank the Lord that the smell of BBQ has not drifted our way because I’m hungry already. This Coors Light is keeping the hunger at bay but I know that a few hours from now, the hunger will be on 300! Next, one of the guys that works here came to take our meat order just to ensure they had enough based on where we are in line. We put in an order of 1/2 lb of brisket, 1/2 lb of sausage, and 1 lb of ribs.
I am really tailgating before the meal, this is crazy! Everyone has their lawn chairs and coolers full of whatever beverage they prefer. The group next to me just popped open a bottle of champagne to make mimosas, someone has music in a group further back, it’s just a good ole party.
So I’ll enjoy this party as I wait for this BBQ.
The Morning After:
Oh what a day! After sitting outside in 90 degree plus heat for 4 hours and another 1/2 hour inside, I was exhausted. I was given an estimated time to eat of 1:30 and thankfully sat down to eat right around 12:45. When I got right outside of the door one of the employees was walking down the line giving out small pulled pork sandwiches, which very nice of them. Look back at it the wait really wasn’t that bad. Go to hangout and have good conversation with new people and enjoy a few cold beers.
Now to the BBQ…In one word, DIVINE! Got to the front of the line and there was beautiful hunk of brisket sitting in front of the meat carver on the chopping block along side a slab of ribs. I couldn’t wait to get my hands on it, as a matter of fact, I am heating up my leftovers as we speak! We ended up with 1/2 lb mix of lean and fatty brisket, 1/2 lb of pulled pork, 4 ribs, and a link of smoked sausage. As well as a side of potato salad.

The pulled pork was light on the smoke and amazing in its own right. I ended up making a nice little sandwich with a piece of white bread and one of the BBQ sauces on the table. At one point I was just grabbing handfuls of pulled pork and dropping them in my mouth.
Now about them ribs! The spice in the rub that was used on the ribs gave a nice bit of heat to the ribs. I know it’s always said the the sign of a good rib is that the meat just slides right off the bone, but I tend to disagree with that. I don’t want to pick up a rib, take a big bite, and pull of the meat that I’ve bitten cleanly from the bone. This is exactly what I got from the ribs at Franklin and it left me a very happy camper.
There is not much to say about the sausage other than it was good! A good amount of smoke and spices, made this sausage extremely enjoyable. The skin had a nice snap when I bit into it and it was good and meaty inside.
